My computer makes a "ding" noise every hour and sometimes more. What is it and how can I make it stop?
The computer is an IBM ThinkPad and the ding noise sounds like a timer that sits on your oven.
It is a highly annoying noise and everyone @ work hates it but I need to keep my volume on for alarms/notices I have set.
It might be overheated, you might have to keep it off for 30mins. to an hour. If you dont it could fry your hardware.

Check the stuff that’s running in your notification area on the right side of the taskbar. I’d bet it’s something in there.
I’ve got a virus scanner that beeps, and some download software that makes a noise when it’s done. You never know what is could be.

Maybe its the events sound:
- right click on the speaker icon on the taskbar and select audio properties.
- at the sound events list, look out for any event that makes the ding sound and change it to None (most probably "open program").
- click OK.
Hope this helps.

Try using the system restore feature if you are using windows XP and restore your computer settings to a later date that you can remember before you set that alarm. Your files will be safe with this method just let your pc restart itself. dont turn it off if it takes a while to restart or you might not be able to access your hard drive.
